RAMIcon v1.0 Archive Documentation
----------------------------------
By Russell Woodford - Sept. 1995
INTRODUCTION
------------
Getting tired of the same ugly disk icon for your RAM Disk?
Well, this simple archive will fix that problem. Once installed,
the included files will give your WorkBench a nice computer chip
icon for your RAM Disk and improve the look of the default disk
icon. Icons are provided for both high resolution (640 x 400)
and medium resolution (640 * 200) WorkBench screens.
REQUIREMENTS
------------
You need AmigaDos/WorkBench 2.0 or higher and IconX in your
c directory to properly use this archive, but the only real
requirements are that your system has a WBStartup drawer and
your palette starts with the default gray, black and white.
If you have a different palette, these icons may not look
right.
ARCHIVE CONTENTS
----------------
def_disk_Hi.info.......High Res. RAM Disk icon image
def_disk_Med.info......Medium Res. RAM Disk icon image
def_floppy_Hi.info.....High Res. Floppy disk icon image
def_floppy_Med.info....Medium Res. Floppy disk icon image

READ_ME................(You're reading it)
ResetDefIcon...........Bootup script for WBStartup
INSTALLATION
------------
Simply double click on the Install icon to install the files
in the appropriate locations on your system disk. You will
have to reboot your Amiga for the changes to take effect.
If you want to remove this installation from your system,
simply double click on the UnInstall icon. All installed
files will be removed and old icons restored.
DESCRIPTION
-----------
You may have noticed that this archive doesn't contain an
actual program. This is such a simple work-around that a
program isn't necessary and minimal system resources (CPU,
RAM, storage) need to be used.
The method of replacing the RAM disk icon is very simple.
Any AmigaDOS disk device that doesn't have a disk.info
file (containing a disk icon image) instead uses the
def_disk.info file located in the ENV-ARCHIVE/SYS drawer
and copied to RAM:ENV/SYS. This is true of the RAM Disk
device. So, by simply modifying the image in def_disk.info
the RAM Disk will now have a different icon.
But...every floppy disk that you insert that doesn't have a
disk.info file will also use this same icon. To have a
different default icon for such floppy disks, you need to
change def_disk.info again. The "trick" is to change it
after WorkBench has loaded, so that the RAM Disk will use
(and continue to use) the first icon image, and floppy
disks will use the updated icon. This change is done by
the ResetDefIcon script which runs on bootup from your
WBStartup drawer.
So, with the provided icons and scripts in place, you now
have a nice computer chip icon for your RAM Disk, and an
improved default floppy disk icon for your floppy disks.
Also, the windows that these icons open on your WorkBench
have more sensible sizes and locations.
THE ICONS
---------
The computer chip and floppy disk icons provided have been
limited to use only three colours, the default gray, black
and white used by WorkBench. This was done to make the
icons look right on the majority of users' WorkBenchs, from
four colour to 256 colour, without forcing them to alter
their chosen palette. Although this isn't the prettiest
option, it is the most practical and also gives the default
icons a suitably generic look.
NOTES & PROBLEMS
----------------
1) The computer chip icon will also be used by any RAD
Devices.
2) The new floppy disk icon will appear only for disks
that do not have disk.info files, and as such, this new
icon will not replace or override any previously saved
disk icons on disks with disk.info files.
3) Any disk device that doesn't have an disk.info and is
mounted before WorkBench is loaded will use the RAM Disk
computer chip icon. This is unavoidable given the simple
nature of this work-around. To get the disk to use the
new floppy disk icon, simply unmount and remount the disk
(eject and reinsert).
4) Non-DOS disks (ie. DF0:????) still use the old ugly
disk icon. This seems to be hard-coded into the OS and
I haven't found a [simple] way around it.
5) The icons have been left with "free" location settings,
meaning that they have no set location (no snapshot).
This allows WorkBench to decide where to place them on
your screen when they are mounted (ideal for floppies).
If anyone needs the ability to "snapshot" the RAM Disk's
location on WorkBench, I may add this feature in the
future.
6) This archive is only meant to be a very simple work-
around for the average user who wants more appropriate
icons for his/her RAM Disk and floppy disks. Users
looking for a more advanced icon system that handles
more devices (CD, Tape backup unit, etc.) should look
into products like Magic Workbench.
7) Using this product with other icon replacement
products like Magic WB is redundant and may cause
conflicts.
